Diamond research on interfaces for versatile electronics

Cel

The focus of this Marie Curie Research and Training Network is on the structural and electronic properties of interfaces and heterostructures based on diamond. Research and training activities within this network will not only deal with solid/solid interfa ces of diamond with itself, and other wide bandgap semiconductors (e.g. AlN, ZnO), but also with diamond/liquid and diamond/gas interfaces, which recently have attracted a lot of attention for novel chemical or biological applications. It has been widely recognized that, because of its unique properties, diamond could eventually become the ultimate electronic material. At present, the limited availability of monocrystalline diamond substrates and the lack of systematic studies concerning the chemical funct ionalization of diamond surfaces etc., are the main obstacles compared to established semiconductor systems such as Si/SiGe and GaAs/AlGaAs. Due to these fundamental technological and material-related challenges, interface properties of diamond-based ele ctronic devices play a major role. The proposed network will hence focus on the different types of interfaces in i) developing high-quality growth processes, and ii) fabrication and testing of various devices (e.g. diodes, sensors, detectors). A variety o f characterisation methods will be used for analysis of the structural and electronic properties of the interfaces. Theoretical modelling and simulations will contribute in the interpretation and prediction of experimental results. The concentration on di amond and its various interfaces will help to focus the research efforts of this network on the common goal to educate young researchers in an exciting and dynamic research area with significant mid-term application opportunities. Wide-ranging and highly m ultidisciplinary skills will hence be the result of the research and training in the participating groups from such fields as chemistry, physics, materials science and electronic engineering.
