The establishment and running of an Innovation Relay Centre in Northern Ireland

The main role of the IRC would be to promote Trans-national Technology Transfer (TTT) between Northern Ireland and other European countries. With a population of 1.7 million Northern Ireland is very dependent on SMEs and over 90% of local companies fall within the SME definition. The IRC would endeavour to assess the technology requirements and sources of expertise by means of close liaison with SMEs and by means of technology audits and IRC organised events. Good relations with the 2 local universiti es would also be exploited to present new technology ideas and areas of expertise to other countries. We would hope to expand on our work with the IRC Central Unit, the Innovation Cells and the NCPs to help exploit the results of European funded researc h work. This is an area where IRCs could contribute greatly by close working with consortia at the project implementation phase and is an area where successes have been few in the past. In addition to our Technology Transfer role the IRC would work to d evelop and strengthen our connections with other EU funded bodies such as the EICs, BICs and IREs. The IRC would draw strongly on its great experience in dealing with technology centred clients and would operate, in all circumstances, under the ISO900 1:2000 Quality Management scheme to ensure a client centred and feedback aware service We would hope to be fully involved in those areas of technology where we have particular expertise, namely, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Devices, Envi ronment and Agrofood. Invest NI facilities and over 500 staff would allow us to provide excellent video conference provision for clients, expert patent searching, business collaboration and licensing advice, marketing advice, translation services and w ell equipped meeting facilities for local clients as well as visiting IRCs or their clients.
