New Burner Technologies for Low Grade Biofuels to Supply Clean Energy for Processes in Biorefineries (BIO-PRO)

Cel

Objectives The project aims on developing new combustion technologies for bio-residues. Innovative combustion technologies like flameless oxidation (FLOX) and continuous air staging (COSTAIR) will be enhanced to develop two basic types of BIO-PRO burners: ·A burner capable to burn gases as well as liquids; ·A burner for solid fuels applying a pre-gasification step. The technology shall be self adjusting to different fuel qualities. For emissions of the investigated fuels the upper limit for CO will be 30 mg/m³ and NOx will be reduced by 50% compared to the combustion of the fuel in available combustion systems. The work programme Based on the waste materials derived from biorefinery processes, different burners will be developed for the fuel mix such as biogas, fermentation residues, fibres etc. The methodology of the work is to develop a gas gas/liquid BIO-PRO burners (GL-burner) which will be extended to burn solid fuels via a pre-gasifier (S-burner). This stepwise development will be assisted be developing a new control technology, incorporating a self-diagnosis module assessing on-line the fuel quality and an adoptive control loop. Expected Results The prototypes of the new burners will be brought to pre-commercialisation level. A successful development and application of the technology is expected to have following impact: ·Increased use of bio-residues, increasing the utilisation of biomass in Europe by up to 50%. This will reduce CO2 emissions by 46 Mio t/a (basis: energy consumption 1998) ·Improved European competitiveness in the global market, accounting for up to 15,000 new jobs NOx emissions from biomass combustion systems will be reduced within 10 years by approx. 76,500 t/a (basis: biomass consumption 1998)
