EUROPEAN NUCLEAR DECOMMISSIONNING TRAINING FACILITY (EUNDETRAF II)

Ziel

Safety in the nuclear industry at all stages, during the operational activities as well as in decommissioning, is paramount. To maintain high safety standards, sufficient number of qualified and skilled manpower is perpetually required. However, the present situation indicates a rather bleak picture. Due to lack of interests on the part of the young generation and duet somewhat tarnished image, the nuclear industry is not getting sufficient high-grade intake. In addition to that, the existing skill base is gradually eroding due to retirement of the aging workforce. The EUNDETRAF II (European Nuclear Decommissioning Training Facility II), following on the success of the EUNDETRAF I, will address this shortfall in skill base by facilitating transfer of knowledge and skill from the existing and experienced experts to the new generation or new entrants in an accelerated way. EUNDETRAF is a consortium of 11 main European organizations representing educational establishments, nuclear industry operators, R & D organizations and regulatory bodies. The consortium consists of SCK-CEN (Belgium), RWE NUKEM (UK), EWN (Germany), University of Hanover (Germany), Bergamot (Belgium), SOGIN (Italy), CEA (France), NRG (Netherlands), UKAEA (UK), DECOM (Slovak Republic) and INSTN (France). The primary aim of theEUNDETRAF is to pool together knowledge and expertise in the field of nuclear decommissioning from acknowledged European experts and then disseminates them to the wider nuclear industry to improve safety standards and European competitiveness. The mechanism of dissemination of knowledge is by holding training courses. The first training course in 2004 will be held in France, the second one in Italy in 2006. Each training course will be composed of a one-week theoretical and one-week practical component.
