This research is aimed at determining the critical levels for certain impurities and tramp elements in the gas carbonisation of three case-hardening steels, thus allowing tolerable levels to be established. The segregation of tramp elements to interfaces, surfaces and grain boundaries will be investigated and extensive mechanical testing will be performed.
