Obiettivo The effort focuses on developing a novel biotechnology-based process for converting cellulose into a variety of shaped items with high value. The method is based on the scientific innovation of using safe and biodegradable enzymes instead of toxic and hazardous carbon disulphide, CS2; in order to produce cellulose regenerated products. The success is achieved by gathering the understanding of the enzymatic action on cellulose and by exploiting this knowledge for the development work. The technology to be developed has a real potential to entirely eliminate CS2 needed in the current production method, and as a consequence, is regarded as an environmental technology, which helps to improve economic growth by reducing environmental protection costs. The life cycle environmental impact of the end-products (cellulose fibres, films, casings, sponges, and coatings) is also substantially lower as compared to that of the viscose-based products. Furthermore, the new products are able to replace some of the oil-based products, which reduce emission of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. This approach provides a sustainable solution for the European cellulose converting industry to continue and increase the production of cellulose shaped items such as fibres, films, casings, sponges, and coatings in the future in spite of tightening legislation in environmental protection. The process will also be an easy, cheap and safe process to be addressed to SMEs. Small companies could start production and create new jobs. The Biocelsol consortium consists of eight research organisations and universities and nine industrial participants, from which five represent small or medium size enterprises (SMEs). The industrial partners cover whole production chain from raw material to end products.
