Objective

This proposal will study novel technologies for the use of environmentally friendly replacements for chromate corrosion inhibitor species used for corrosion protection of high-strength aluminum alloys especially in the aerospace industry. The programme will consider the performance of environmentally friendly anti-corrosion treatments in a holistic fashion (systems approach) rather than separately. The work will explore synergies between novel aluminum surface treatments based on nanotechnologies and the inhibitor-containing organic coating as well as synergies between novel mixtures of conventional corrosion inhibitor species. The project aim is to devise strategies for identifying novel positive approaches for replacement of the chromate conversion coating and chromate primer paint.
