Objective The use of very low yield strength consumables (with very low hydrogen content in weld metal) in the root run of constructional steel welds can decrease/eliminate the need for pre-heat without cold cracks appearing. This research will extend previous work to high strength steel grades FeE 460 and FeE 690. Mechanical properties of the test welds will be determined using CTOD tests, wide plate tests and component testing. The general yield behaviour of defect-free welded components will be studied.
