Cel Mathematical modelling of biochemical networks has attracted considerable attention inrecent years and is recognised as one of the major challenges facing the biology researchcommunity today. The models available in the literature can be classified into two families:models with purely continuous dynamics (e.g. models for the evolution of concentrations ofproteins in terms of ordinary differential equations) and models with purely discrete dynamics(e.g. graph models of the interdependencies in a regulatory network, Boolean networks).Even though it is widely recognised that many biochemical processes involve both discrete and continuous dynamics, there have been very few attempts to establish links between these two classes. In system theory and engineering, systems that involve the interaction of continuous and discrete phenomena are referred to as "hybrid systems". For the last ten years, this class of systems has been the topic of intense research activity in controlengineering and computer science. The primary motivation has been the central role thathybrid dynamics play in embedded computation systems, where digital devices interactwith an analogue environment. The research effort has resulted in powerful methods, boththeoretical and computational, for modelling, analysing and controlling the behaviour of hybridsystems. The objective of HYGEIA is to exploit recent developments in the area of hybridsystems to address open problems in modelling and analysis of biochemical networks. Ourinterdisciplinary team will combine new, data rich, biological technologies with methodologicaland computational advances in hybrid systems to enable a complete re-thinking of modelling, analysis and regulation of biological processes that display hybrid behaviour, such as theregulation of the cell cycle and cell differentiation.
