Unifying Networks for Science and Society

Objetivo

Mastering networks has become one of the major challenges in modern societies where constantly new links among entities on different scales are created or discovered, ranging from molecules to the interactions of societies on a global level. This has le d to a variety of theories and their applications in different branches of science, from physics and chemistry to ecology and economics. Presently it is not easy to compare different network theories which go beyond the simplest graph theoretical concepts . This is not only partly due to the different scopes of such theories. More often certain concepts have played a more dominant role in specific applications, sometimes due to the set of recordable data, sometimes due to historic reasons acting during the evolution of scientific subjects. We feel strongly that there is currently a need for the unification of network theories for applications in different areas. A major scientific breakthrough can be expected by exploring the concepts of current network t heories in different areas of science. Here mathematics plays a central role in our concept. The unification and generalisation of available results will allow a reinterpretation of transferred theories in the context of different applications. From that starting point even major improvements of theoretical results are likely which can then again feed back into the different disciplines. We will choose 5 different such specific applications where during this "unification theory of feedback cycle" new insi ghts and technological improvements can be expected.
