Identification and Assessment of Promising Emerging Technological Fields in Europe

Obiettivo

PROM-TECH aims at the identification of promising emerging technological fields. Its approach is based on the observation that recent technology often implies extreme miniaturization and extreme physical characteristics (with respect to electric conducti v-ity, temperature resistance, hardness) so that new technologies are closely linked to physics. The results of this support action will allow for identifying "pacemaker" tech-nologies in an early phase of their development and of the scientific communit ies which might become key players in these fields. A further goal of PROM-TECH is to support the European Commission in selecting appropriate topics for R&D programs within FP7. PROM-TECH will start with a bibliometric analysis of articles in the mult idisciplinary database PASCAL with co-classification in technology or medicine on the one hand and physics on the other hand. The selection of the relevant fields will be made in several steps. For the first rough selection, a growth rate analysis will be performed. The most promising fields will be submitted to experts for a deeper analysis of content and tech-nological prospects, paralleled by a co-word analysis to characterize the remaining fields more deeply. Finally a workshop will be organised and a r eport will be prepared. The consortium of PROM-TECH consists of ARC sys, Fraunhofer ISI and INIST. ARC sys and Fraunhofer ISI have long experiences in bibliometric analysis and science and technology oriented qualitative analysis. Both organisations have b road access to ex-perts in science and technology. INIST is producer of the database PASCAL and thus has direct access to the data necessary for this support action. Though we have a different approach and aim at a different stage of the development of new technical fields, we offer to coordinate and discuss our approach and findings with the team working on the project that tries "to identify new and emerging scientific trends" (Code: ASSIST-2004-01-2).
