NEST Conference on Developing New Areas of Science and Technology in Europe

Objective

The purpose of this proposal, submitted under the Specific Support Action for NEST, is to hold an international conference on the development of new areas of science and technology. This 2-day conference designed to attract 250 attendees is foreseen to tak e place in London on 20/21 September 2005, that is, during the UK Presidency of the EU. It will act both as a showcase for NEST activities across the EU and as a means of reflecting on the ways in which new and emerging areas of science and technology can be nurtured and supported at EU and national levels. There will be poster sessions for NEST projects as well as presentations and round-table discussions which will illustrate with examples the lessons learnt to date as well as the questions raised and sol ved by the NEST programme. With FP7 discussions intensifying, this conference will focus in a practical way on the issue of how funding programmes can more effectively promote a capacity for creative opportunity-seeking in European research. Using the ex perience of the NEST programme, it is hoped that new insights can be gleaned for future EU funded research, particularly in the high-risk and interdisciplinary areas. The conference will be coordinated by UCL with Dr Ilse Vickers acting as Conference D irector, whilst Ken Guy, the Director of Wise Guys Ltd, will act as Conference Adviser. It is envisaged that an external conference organiser will be appointed to deal with some of the practicalities. Negotiations are also under way for the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to co-sponsor the event and hold it at the DTI?s conference centre in London.
