Brain, respiration and cardiac causalities in anaesthesia

Ziel

Recent developments in the analysis of synchronization and directionality of couplings for nonlinear and chaotic oscillators will be applied to study the complex interactions between brain waves and cardio-respiratory oscillations during anaesthesia. Pre liminary studies have shown that marked changes occur in the inter-oscillator interactions during anaesthesia. These could form a new bases for measurement of anaesthesia. An interdisciplinary consortium of scientist will carry out and analyse experiment s on humans and rats. The work will involve (i) further development of methods for analyses of complex interactions, (ii) measurements and data collection, (iii) time series analysis, (iv) mathematical modelling of interactions between coupled oscillato rs, and (v) neurological, physiological and clinical interpretation of mechanisms of inter-oscillator couplings during anaesthesia and consciousness. Causal relationships between the oscillatory processes will be evaluated for various stages of anaesthesi a and consciousness. Protocols will be prepared for a larger scale study that will follow and will aim at standardising the measures for depth of anaesthesia based on inter-oscillators couplings. The tools developed during this research programme will be directly applicable to anaesthesiology, cardiovascular studies, neurology and physiology, but will also be useful for reviling complex interactions quite generally, e.g. in meteorology, geology, sociology and economics.
