ISIS Target Station 2

Objetivo

ISIS Target Station 2 is a major upgrade of the ISIS spallation neutron source, offering the possibility for 18 new neutron scattering instruments with significantly improved and optimized performance, the emphasis being on research in soft condensed mat ter, bio-molecular sciences and advanced materials. This represents a significant increase in both the capacity and capability for research using neutron scattering in Europe. This project will enable the first seven instruments to be developed as a Euro pean collaboration. This will broaden the European knowledge base in spallation source instrumentation and provide enhanced access for European users to the full range of scientific research opportunities available at ISIS. The project has three key obje ctives: - Construction, commissioning and initial operation of the ISIS Second Target Station including buildings and services, extracted proton beam, target station and moderators. - Construction and commissioning of seven instruments on ISIS Target Station 2. - Exploitation of the ISIS Target Station 2 in the ISIS user programme. The ISIS Target Station 2 project is a key part of a strategy to maintain a strong level of internationally leading neutron scattering capability in Europe, in line with the recommendations of the OECD Megascience forum (1998) and European Strategic Forum on Research Infrastructures (2002). The scientific and business cases for TS2 are so strong that the UK government is investing more than 150M? in the projec t.
