Objective This proposal aims to improve the research capacities of Molecular Medicine Center (MMC) at the Medical Faculty of Sofia, Bulgaria. It targets improving capacities in specific R&T subjects, where the Molecular Medicine Center has already reached a crit ical threshold and international recognition and has sound collaborations with EU research centers. Ultimately this will enhance the potential of Bulgarian researchers, facilitate integration in the European Research Area, and allow the development of sel f-sustaining research programmes.The proposed restructuring and upgrade of the country's major research and diagnostic facility in the field of human molecular genetics will provide the intellectual hub and technology platform that will further stimulate t he interest and meet the local needs of the biomedical research community. The inter-disciplinary nature of the MMC will provide a critical mass of expertise in various fields of medicine and genetics. The commitment of the Medical Faculty to promoting n ovel and dynamic research and creating an improved interactive research environment will attract and retain young scientists and facilitate the dissemination of knowledge. The mobility component of the project and exchange of visits with collaborators from other European Countries will broaden the scope of the activities and increase the international competitiveness and quality of research.The Medical Faculty of Sofia is a national center with a significant influence on the development of biomedical rese arch in Bulgaria. The requested funding and the resulting strengthening of its research capacity will have an impact on the rest of the country by providing opportunities for collaboration.
