In this project we want to build on the momentum which has been already achieved and focus our acti vity on knowledge gaps with the aims: (i) to gain a deeper and global understanding of the key issues at stake and how they are linked with each other and to develop RIS; (ii) to diagnose the innovation capacity of key sectors, both industrial and services sectors that exist within the region; (iii) to identify the state of technologies applied in the region and the wider pertinent technological advances. The work under the project consists on 13 workpackages: Kick Off; Management structure; Regional consen sus building; Promotion and communication; Project methodology; Clusters analysis; Regional foresight; Regional benchmarking; Technology audits; Formulation of the regional innovation strategy; Action plan; Monitoring and evaluation and Management and coor dination. The objectives of the project will contribute to achievement of the following objectives of the "Research and innovation" theme: (i) setting up the basis of a European innovation system by networking players, promoting cooperation, breaking down barriers, and encouraging transnational learning; (ii) preparation the implementing regions to absorb EU funding in a more efficient way; (iii) strengthening co-operation across Europe and opening new areas of transnational activities to the implementing r egions; (iv) facilitating the transfer of good practices and the installation of research and innovation strategies in new EU member states. The project blends directly into the priorities of the Lisbon strategy, which points at innovation and entrepreneur ship as a crucial element in achieving its political objectives. The Benchmarking exercise will contribute to the development of the open co ordination method in the above areas.
