Obiettivo

Terms such as "the new economy" or "globalisation" have been used to describe a set of key developments that gathered momentum beginning in the late 20th century. They include technological change, as well as other factors tending to increase competition at the international as well as national levels (such as market integration, deregulation and privatisation). We do not yet fully understand the impact of these developments on competition and anti-trust policy; the conferences propose here are intended to explore these issues. The three following proposed conferences address the issue of competition policy in the contest of globalisation and new economy with a particular focus on empirical work: The Nature of Competition in the New Economy; Innovation and Market Power in the New Economy; and The Role of Competition Policy in the New Economy.

We believe that EuroConferences organised on these three themes would encourage the production and diffusion of a coherent and highly innovative set of advances by European researchers. These advances will not only contribute to the scientific literature on competition and innovation, but will also provide fresh insights for European policy-makers, as they seek to address the issues of competition policy in the new economy. A second important dimension of the proposed conferences is the emphasis on empirical research. There is an almost complete absence of empirical work carried out within a coherent theoretical framework on the nature of the new economy in general, and on the role of competition policy in particular. The three proposed conferences would advance empirical research in this area.
