Symbiotic stars

Ziel

It is proposed to organise a Euroconference with the title "Symbiotic stars probing stellar evolution", to be held on the island of La Palma, Spain, on May 27-31, 2002. Half or maybe two thirds of stars in the Universe are binaries. Among them, symbiotic stars are believed to be important objects not only to understand better stellar evolution in binary stars, but also to discuss phenomena that are relevant to a number of other astrophysical fields.

As 5 years have passed since the last international workshop dedicated to the subject, the proposed EuroConference is aimed at revising the state-of -the-art in the field of symbiotic stars, as well as to emphasise, for the first time in a comprehensive way, the links to other branches of astrophysics, such as red giants, planetary nebulae, novae, supersoft X -ray sources and supernovae.

To achieve these goals, the scientific programme of the conference is organised so as to have invited review talks which cover all the different subjects related to symbiotic stars and binary stars evolution, and which will be given by leading scientists in each particular field. This will help in strengthening the world leadership that European astronomers had so far in this field, by promoting future collaborative projects, training young researchers, and stimulating new ideas to extend this (mainly European) expertise to other important fields of astrophysics.
