Glyco xvi

Ziel

The scientific program will cover recent progress in the wide spectrum of glycoconjugate research, including glycobiochemistry, glycobiology, glycochemistry, glycoimmunology, and glycotechnology, ranging from parasites to men and from microbes to plants. The Organizing Committee aims to stimulate the dissemination of the latest results in this area to as many (young) European researchers as possible.

Glycoconjugates have a key function in the control of immunological and cellular functions, and in recognition processes between the cell and its environment. Many diseases are caused by flaws in control mechanisms that are not immediately essential for life itself, but which assert the normal social behaviour of differentiated cells in multicellular organisms.

Errors in this post- translational modification process may lead to serious diseases because the recognition by the cell of its controlling environment becomes impaired. The topics discussed during the conference cover a plethora of human and animal health related issues, such as the development of novel glycoconjugate based vaccines, the glycosylation effects of BSE-related prions, the development or novel functional foodstuffs.

Glycoconjugate research also relates directly to (anti) inflammatory and (anti-) allergic processes as well as the fight against parasites and cancer. The study of these processes and the potential development of new foodstuffs and/or therapeutics provide ample scientific and socio-economic reasons to organize this conference.

Moreover, the Organizing Committee encourages the active participation by young researchers from EU member and associated states and in particular from less-favoured regions, in order to disseminate the presented knowledge throughout these European countries. The number of young researcher and the level of support is dependant of the amount of acquired funding.
