Objective

This programme aims to build a cohort of elite young researchers with specific expertise in carrying out European comparative research in the areas of migration and ethnic diversity. . These Summer Schools address the need of the European Union for coherent and sensitive comparative research data that can shape policy development and evaluation. They start from the recognition that different national traditions within social science theory and method frequently inhibit effective research collaboration. Additionally, the quite distinct ways in which European states have developed a philosophy and practice around managing ethnic diversity has made comparative research in the area difficult.

Through two intensive European Summer Schools it will provide expert training in comparative research. These Summer Schools will be small, intensive and practically focused on policy relevant research skills. The Summer Schools will employ formal lectures/discussions with established experts in the field. Importantly these same experts will be available to facilitate intensive workshop groups of young researchers. And, they will be available for extensive informal discussion.

The commitment of the Expert Staff Group to commit days, rather than hours, to each Summer School, is a key distinctive feature of this programme. Whilst each Summer School is an independent event they have a shared philosophy and pedagogy. However, they both are built around an established network of centres of excellence. And uniquely, the Summer Schools both enable a cohort of young researchers to be inducted into this academic community.

Specifically, since they are organised by an established European Doctoral programme in Migration, Diversity and Identity these Summer Schools will induct elite young researchers into an existing and extensive European research network that has an on-going programme of activities. The distinctive value of these Summer Schools is there ability to link expert training to a continuing participation in a European research network this is a network with an excellent record of relating research to policy.
