Aphasia

Objective

Historically, the benefits of aphasia therapy have been controversial based on largely anecdotal accounts. Views on the value of therapy to treat aphasia have fluctuated over the years. More recently, changes in our society have dictated the need for scientific evidence describing the nature course, and time of recovery in aphasia and how intervention can facilitate it. Increased advances in technology and the development of brain imaging techniques have provided greater insights into the patterns of recovery and how therapy can enhance it.

However, we still lack a widely accepted scientific approach in describing the nature of aphasia and aphasia therapy. Current changes at the socio-economic dynamics of health care delivery in different countries have resulted in a wide variability of methods of delivery of therapy to aphasic patients. This has not only implication for the individual, but also for the socio-economic climate of the community that he lives and functions.
