We propose an interdisciplinary EuroConference focussed on two main aspects of Seismology, namely, the mechanics of the faulting process of earthquakes, and the structure of the Earth. For many years scientists in separate fields have been working on these problems from different points of view, namely, theoretical, observational, and laboratory experimental ones.

At the beginning of the new millennium, it is a propitious time to bring together all these scientists from many countries to review the state-of-the-art at the cutting edge of research in this area and to consider future lines of development. Scientists from as varied subject areas as fracture mechanics, mathematics, seismology; earthquake engineering as well as from industry will be invited to participate. In addition to the list of distinguished core group of speakers, wide participation of younger scientists and their interaction with more established researchers would be a key feature of this conference.

The aim is a comprehensive examination from theoretical, observational and laboratory view points of where the subject has been, where it is today, and where it is going (i.e. some review papers, some state-of-the-art papers and some discussions on what are the unsolved problems and what can we do to solve them). The conference will be divided into five sessions:

- From laboratory experiments to earthquake dynamics;
- Generation of seismic waves and earthquake source;
- Deep focus earthquakes;
- Earth structure and seismic wave modelling;
- Earthquake damage and prediction of strong ground motion.

The major part of the meeting will be devoted to the subject of earthquakes and related problems, but since the waves from the earthquake travel through the Earth, the Earth structure must also be considered and the remainder of the meeting will be devoted to it. The basic framework of the meeting is a common interest of all participants in the methods of applied mathematics.
