Objective Natural Products Research has become a key discipline of the life sciences. The development of new pharmaceuticals and of crop protecting agents heavily relies on the discovery and understanding of novel molecules capable of specifically interacting with living organisms. In the infective disease and cancer areas, the share of natural product-related compounds exceeds 60 % of the newly approved drugs. Science has to answer, e.g. to the upcoming antibiotics crisis exemplified by the resistance of certain tuberculosis-causing bacteria against -lactam antibiotics and even vancomycin. The understanding of the chemical interactions between organisms is mandatory for progress in ecology.The world's oceans compose over 70% of the earth's surface and 90% of the volume of its crust. Over the past 30 years, sessile invertebrates, algae, and marine microorganisms have proven to be rich sources of novel, biologically active natural products. Important examples already brought to the market include the anti-inflammatory pseudopterosins and, recently, ecteinascidin 743 as anti-cancer agent. Although European research facilities are excellent, the vast majority of scientific contributions originate from research groups located in the USA and in Japan. The European research activities in Marine Natural Products Chemistry have to be further strengthened. The proposed conference will be characterized by the intense discussion of a large number of young, talented researchers from Europe with experienced, internationally renowned scientists from universities and industry. To ensure the maximum benefit for the younger participants, all of the following, major research topics in the interdisciplinary field of Marine Natural Products Research will be addressed: isolation and structure elucidation, total synthesis, chemistry and biology of marine microorganisms, biosynthesis, ecological function of marine natural products. The 3rd Euroconference on Marine Natural Products (2002) follows its predecessors held in Athens (1997) and in Santiago de Compostela (1999), which have been a full success.
