Ca 2+binding proteins

Ziel

The Sixth European Symposium on Calcium Binding proteins will be held in Paris 14-18 June 2000. It will be the 6th symposium of a series of European Symposia on Calcium Binding Proteins in Normal and Transformed Cells that are held every second year in different European cities. In line with the previous symposia in this series, the Paris meeting aims at encouraging exchanges and discussions in various areas of the role of calcium in cell biology and diseases.

Topics expected to be covered range from calcium sensing and signalling to molecular aspects of calcium-regulated events and the characteristics of different calcium binding proteins. Among the latter, C2-domain proteins, annexins, EF-hand proteins, extra-cellular proteins will be covered with respect to their structure and function. Structural information obtained by different techniques will be presented. The functional approaches, including the generation of dominant negative mutants as well as gene knockouts both at the cellular level and in mice are gaining momentum.

A large number of communications will address the use of new technologies localising in real time calcium-binding proteins in relation to calcium levels by the use of new probes, new optical & electronic devices. Finally, in addition to covering aspects of basic research, new results establishing correlation between proteins involved in calcium-stimulus response coupling and human diseases will be presented.

The meeting will be attended by around 150 to 200 persons. It will be a forum for discussing novel scientific results both during the talks & in the poster sessions. An important participation of companies developing new devices & new soft wares is in discussion. They will present material and will offer workshops in the afternoon. A large number of young researchers are expected (which is the reason for asking EC funding for this conference) and they will be given the opportunity to present their data in short oral communications.
