Exploitation of European databases of images protected by IPR

Objective

Difficulties to access publicly available IPR information for non-specialists often result in fraud, which has a dramatic impact on Europe's economy. Currently, access to registered images (trademark logos, industrial designs, etc.) is offered through formal textual description, which is timely and demands professional support.

eMage demonstrates an Internet-based service, providing easy and multilingual access to databases of trademarks and industrial designs. These databases are populated and maintained by European IP Offices and SMEs.

eMage exploits a prototype system that identifies images in large databases using pattern recognition technology, plus natural language access to classification information. The service will be demonstrated in two contexts:

- Non-professional users (SMEs) and customs authorities looking for counterfeit goods in airports or ports, using a digital camera and having access to the Internet;
- Sustainability of the service and agreement at a European level between IP Offices.
