Design of novel multi-functional materials based on isopolyanions

Cel

This project aims to synthesis and investigate a new range of conducting solid state materials based on inorganic complexes of isopolyanions. These materials play an important role in a range of devices from optical detectors to sensors. They possess two types of conductivity, electronic and ionic which we aim to investigate using a range of electrochemical and surface science techniques. Key research questions such as the mechanism of charge transport within the materials, the effect of pH on both the physical structure and charge transport dynamics and the effect of redox switching on the materials solid state morphology will be answered. Our findings will have an impact on the development of materials for solid state applications. The main objectives are:1. Synthesis and characterisation of novel analytically pure redox active materials;2. The study of charge transport dynamics of surface immobilised materials;3. Elucidation of the materials solid state structure;4. Modelling the effect of protonation on materials solid state structure and charge transport dynamics. These objectives will be achieved using innovations and tasks involving the use of voltammetric and surface techniques. It is hoped that this project will provide the top-class researcher from China the means to acquire new skills/experience which will aid her professional development and support knowledge transfer upon her return to China. Both scientific and complementary training will be provided in order to enhance the researchers experience and to maximise career prospects within her chosen area.
