RECOGNITION MEMORY: A MULTIDISCIPLINARY AND INTEGRATED APPROACH TO THE CHARACTERIZATION OF THE COGNITIVE PROCESSES INVOLVED IN SPATIAL RECOGNITION DECISIONS.

Ziel

Research has been carried out in the last 35 yrs on the nature of the cognitive processes involved in Recognition Memory (RM). Contribution has been given by Cognitive Behavioral and Neuroscience studies, but concluding evidence has not been provided yet. Research on RM is important not only for Human Memory studies, but also in relation to Clinical studies on Memory pathological conditions (Amnesia Dementia Alzheimer). One of the major drawbacks in this research field is the lack of synergy between Neurosc ientific and Behavioural approach. Recent evidence has however shown that much better results can be achieved when these two approaches are integrated. Neuroscientific evidence also shows how studies on RM should more appropriately focus on Spatial Memory tasks as these involve neural substrates that are the core of both RM processes and pathologies. My project wants to give further contribution in this sense, combining behavioural experiments with neuromonitoring techniques and using Spatial Memory tasks a s applicative target. I will compare results given by Behavioral studies and ERPs scans, and I'll also collect original information using a Virtual Spatial Navigation program. Becoming familiar with the use of ERP techniques will enable me to add new and i mportant scientific competencies to my professional background while diversifying my expertise at multidisciplinary level. The use of a virtually new investigation technique (Virtual Spat. Nav.), and the acquisition of additional complementary skills will significantly promote my professional maturity and independence not only as a researcher, but also as an academic. Finally, my project meets the objectives of the ERA and of the HRM program in that it promotes scientific cooperation at national and interna tional level within the EU, it promotes the development of research activities in less favourite regions of the EU and it supports the role of women in science and at the most advanced level in academia.
