Objective Since 1999, Florence has been appointed by the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) to host in 2005 its XX congress. The world delegates were convinced from the facilities and the reliability of the organization. The IUCr triennial Congress usuall y attracts about 2500 participants. Crystallography is a multidisciplinary science, which deals with the structural aspects of nature at the atomic level and boasts numerous Nobel laureates. A prestigious scientific programme is planned. The topics will co ver all aspects of modern crystallography, from mathematics to physics, chemistry, life sciences, mineralogy, materials science, computing, etc. There will be 36 plenary lectures and about 100 micro-symposia with the participation of renowned authorities a s well as young speakers. Training of young scientists is a priority for the event. Not only the variety of themes will orient their future studies, but also special sessions are planned for them such as, for example, a meeting with Nobel laureates. Hands-on sessions will be organized to master computer programs and scientific apparatuses, also made available by the exhibitors. The presence of the latter confirms the reciprocal interests between industry and crystallography and the high inter-sectorial char acter of the event. The mixture between the high scientific contents, the attractiveness of the Florentine culture, the social events is a guarantee of success. The large attendance, the trans-national character, the quality of the program will open a larg e window on the European research with chances of cross-fertilisation and integration with the rest of the world. This proposal fits well in the MC LCF program. If provided, the funds will be used to host young scientists, according to the priorities impos ed by the action. There are no issues of ethical or safety character. Equal opportunities between genders are already reflected by the 50% presence of women amongst the organizers.
