Objective The main objective of the project described in this proposal is to provide a stable framework for the re-integration of a female European researcher, who has been conducting academic research in top US Institutes for over 5 years. The project will allow th e host institution to benefit from the knowledge and experience acquired by the applicant in her previous training and work in Europe and the USA. The applicant's strong background in molecular biology and bioinformatics are of significant importance to th is proposal. As a result of this action, the applicant will continue her professional activity in her field of expertise in the EU by developing a network portal related to cancer and apoptosis. The scientific objective of the CAPFM portal network is to identify novel functional modules involved in cancer and apoptosis. This network will use informatic tools and input from experimentalists. Experimental validation of significant prediction subsets will be an integral part of the process, leading to a con tinuous iterative improvement in the methods. The network portal will bring together the results obtained from many of the best European laboratories, to create a European concerted network focused specifically on cancer and apoptosis. The development of t his portal will encourage and optimize cooperation rather than duplication of effort, and will also be pro-active, encouraging closer integration between the experimentalist and bioinformatician. The information contained in the CAPFM will be available in the public domain and easily accessible through a single interface in the web, using a distributed annotation system (DAS) to ensure interoperability, which will evolve to take advantage of new developments in the GRID.Combating cancer is one of the seven main objectives of the Sixth Framework Program. The CAPFM portal will assemble available knowledge to be used by experimentalists in reaching this goal, increasing and enhancing European competitiveness.'
