Obiettivo "The EU declared 2003 the `European Year of People with Disabilities¿ to increase the awareness about the situation of its millions of disabled citizens. Currently, it is estimated that at least 10% of the EU population will be affected by a disability. Fa cing such numbers and considering the current-state-of-the-art, improving the functionality of leg prostheses has developed into a research area of critical importance. The proposed MC OIF project ¿Lower Limb Prostheses Design and Control based on Gait Tem plates¿ (PRO-LEG) aims to respond to this societal demand. It suggests to improve leg prostheses by introducing local control of active joints based on the functional understanding of human legged locomotion that the participants gained over the past decad e. Within the specific action of the MC OIF, the project PRO-LEG allows the applicant to combine his scientific motivation with reinforcing the international dimension of his career by giving him the outstanding opportunity to be trained in a world-leading third country research organization, the MIT, at postdoctoral level. With the Biomechatronics Group at MIT, the outgoing host combines technical expertise on leg prostheses marking the current scientific edge with a highly competitive, world-leading resea rch and training environment. In the second phase, the applicant will return to the Locomotion Laboratory at the Jena University. Positioned in a less-favored region, the return host has developed into a world-recognized Center of Motion Sciences. Within th is center, the restructuring process is still onging. The applicant is committed to contribute to this developmental process by transferring back the scientific expertise gained in the outgoing phase. Moreover, the active role he expects to play within thi s process will give him an outstanding opportunity to distinct himself using complementary skills at an early stage of his career."
