Objectif The proposal deals with the durability of solid oxide fuel cells, focusing on the anode and anode supports. One of the major technological challenges that have to be overcome in order for the promising SOFC technology to become a real option in the global electricity generation is to bring the durability of the cells to an acceptable level. The degradation mechanisms are not yet fundamentally known. The most drastic conditions for most practical SOFC applications are changes from reducing to oxidising atmos phere and backwards on the anode side. This process, called a Reduction-Oxidation (RedOx) cycle, is very critical for the performance of a SOFC stack, especially in small scale (1-5 kW) systems. The project aims to improve the RedOx stability of SOFC anode s and involves work in three phases. 1) selection of novel materials for Ni-passivation and for the enhancement of sintering of the ceramic anode support structure will be evaluated. 2) anode supports with different additions of passivation elements and si ntering additives are prepared and RedOx-cycled. 3) The influence of the macroscopic anode support expansion during oxidation on the thin-deposited electrolyte layer will be tested and optimised for the most promising anode supports found. The project will be conducted within the fuel cell programme of the Risoe National Laboratory, Materials Research Department, Roskilde, Denmark. The objective of the project is to build fundamental knowledge in SOFC technology through advanced research training, create a n ew competence area for the applicant and after the fellowship, to add to the Finnish SOFC competence pool through a continuing research career in the field. The project also aims to deepen of the already-established R and D co-operation between the two cou ntries, aimed at making a commercial product of the SOFC. As a by-product of the research training the applicant will attain a D.Sc. (Tech) degree at the Helsinki University of Technology, Helsinki, Finland.
