Obiettivo In this project we intend to study the interplay between mechanical stresses and the global geometry in different systems which give rise to formation of complex patterns. One such system regards the packing of 1D objects, such as ropes, in 3D containers s uch as spheres. Another such system is a network of cracks whose evolution is coupled to the global geometry of the material they fragment. Last, we intend to study the existence and properties of slip pulses which allow two solids to slide one on another with hardly any friction, where here too the microscopic dynamics of the slip pulses are coupled to the global geometry of those solids. This is a theoretical research with impact on a wide range of experimental fields, such as the growth of crack networks , the packing of viral DNA in capsids, propagation without (almost any) friction and earthquakes. In all of these examples there is interplay between small-scale interactions and some large-scale constraints which lead to complex structures, and to non tri vial dynamics. The Fellow is an exceptionally successful PhD graduate with 11 published papers. The training agenda is principally to broaden his range of techniques and fields of application, and to develop his international profile. The Host is a major F rench training and research institution where the exact sciences are concentrated in one building, and with many more relevant research labs in nearby institutes, providing a unique focus for this research.
