Mast Cells and Chronic Inflammatory Disease (MCCID): a PhD research training project for combined fundamental and clinical investigation

Objective

Eight laboratories with their associated host institutions submit this application for early stage research training under the Marie Curie label in combined fundamental and clinical studies. It is designed to promote the interest of PhD scientists in under taking collaborative studies with clinicians to overcome existing structural problems for clinically oriented research in Europe due to the limited availability of clinicians. The proposal is based on the constitution of a multidisciplinary research networ k investigating the new, but still poorly defined, roles of mast cells in a whole set of chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, bowel disease, fibrosis and even cancer and cardiovascular disease with an enormous imp act on health costs in the EU. PhD students under a personal tutor, specialised in a particular disease, will be trained in a structured program within a research group investigating both basic fundamental and clinical questions. An exchange program will b e organised that allows the PhD students to appreciate the multidisciplinary research approach and participate in collaborative network research. Besides training in doctoral schools of individual host institutions, the PhD students will be provided with a series of lectures during common network meetings stimulating their interest and knowledge in clinical investigative work under a defined theme. The application is for 336 fellow months and will be performed under the guidelines required by this specific Marie Curie action. The ultimate goal is to foster the instalment of a European PhD school for combined fundamental and clinical studies under the label of Marie Curie actions.
