Pathogenesis of pulmonary disease

Objetivo

Exposure of the lung surface to air-born pollutants or other toxic/ infectious agents causes reactions at the air-liquid interface, the immune system, the epithelial barrier and adjacent tissue. This may result in acute and/or chronic diseases, representin g an increasing socio-economic burden to the European Community. Their underlying pathogenetic mechanisms involve physico-chemical events, such as air-liquid interface phenomena, and cellular events, such as immune defense, secretion, transport and barrier (dys)functions. The further elucidation of the pathogenesis of pulmonary disease will be achieved only if an integrated research approach is undertaken. This will need to encompass biophysical, biochemical, (patho)physiological and immunological events ta king place in a narrow space. The proposed RTN is headed by top scientists in these diverse but complementary fields of basic pulmonary biology and offers excellent training opportunities. It will provide a structured training program for early-stage and e xperienced researchers and increase the number of broadly trained expert pulmonary scientists exposed to different ¿schools of thought¿ and needed for new developments in pulmonology. Extensive transfer of knowledge will enhance methodological progress and exchange of research tools/ideas needed to develop miniaturized organ systems for in vitro pulmonary toxicity testing, and to define endpoint parameters for lung damage. This will provide a basis for new therapeutic approaches, the identification of risk factors, the prevention of disease and a diminished need for animal experiments. The participation of a SME and the strong connections between the university partners and pharmaceutical and other companies will provide training in intellectual property and entrepreneurial issues. A unique postgraduate program in Pulmonary Biology, developed in this project, will ensure sustainability of the project and the creation of a training center of excellence.
