NEUROWEB: Integration and sharing of information and knowledge in neurology and neurosciences

Objective

The aim of the project is to design and develop an intelligent web-based system that allows integration, easy access and sharing of clinical data and biomedical knowledge, with a prototypical application in neurology and neurosciences. The system, based on semantic web technology and on web services, will perform tasks such as retrieving (throughout the web), integrating and delivering neurological information. By means of the system, the dissemination of information among health professionals, specialists and researchers will be improved, the access to existing clinical databases and therapeutical/diagnostic protocols and guidelines will be facilitated, and relevant findings from basic research will be readily and quickly made available to support teleconsulting concerning difficult clinical cases. A network based on Internet technology among the medical institutions involved in this project will be created. Doctors will use the system to access clinical information and knowledge from a networked computer regardless of regional or national boundaries and constraints.

On the technological side, the core of the project will be the development of an intelligent system able to retrieve an integrated neurological information and knowledge. The system will be based on web-service technology to ensure interoperability and enhance accessibility through the use of browser-based clients. The development of the system will concern two main aspects: the publication via web-services of the existing huge knowledge base already available at the neurological departments and research centres involved in the project; and the development of web-services that combine statistical tools, artificial intelligence and machine learning to deliver semantic support to searching, retrieving and integrating information.
