Networked Audiovisual Media Technologies

Description du projet

IST-2005-2.41.6

VISNET II NoE Project Summary
VISNET II is a European Network of Excellence (NoE) (http://www.visnet-noe.org), funded under the European Commission IST FP6 programme, which builds on the success and achievements of the VISNET I NoE to continue the progress towards achieving the NoE mission of creating a sustainable world force in Networked Audiovisual (AV) Media Technologies. Its main strategic objectives revolve around its integration, joint research and dissemination activities. More specifically, VISNET II aims to:

 Integrate world-leading institutions to create a world force in the area of Networked AV Media Technologies. Integration is aimed to be achieved both vertically within three major thematic areas covered by the NoE objectives and horizontally across the three themes defining the scope of research in VISNET II. Integration specific objectives involve the regular exchange of resources, facilities, technical and scientific skills and abilities between the participating organisations, so that their joint research potential and international competence can be unveiled. Additionally, strategic alliances between VISNET II partners will be built aiming at strengthening the foundations of research collaboration resulting in further technological excellence in the area of networked multimedia systems and AV processing techniques.

 Make significant contributions to the sustainable advance of research in the field of networked 2D/3D AV systems and home platforms. The joint research objectives cover three major thematic areas, namely:
o Advanced video coding
o AV media processing
o Security.

• Implement an efficient dissemination plan aiming at improving knowledge economy and enhancing the socio-economic life standards of EU citizens. The project’s dissemination objectives can be summarised as follows:
o Up-to-date spreading of technological and scientific achievements of the Network to the widest possible audience of all social and scientific backgrounds
o Exploitation of accruing technologies in technology transfer, SME investments and partnerships to facilitate tools and conditions that will improve the standards of life of EU citizens
o Implementation of a number of training programmes addressed to researchers as well as users of VISNET II technologies, emerging services and applications.

VISNET II brings together 12 leading European organisations in the field of Networked AV Media Technologies. The consortium consists of organisations known for their proven track record as well as both national and international reputations in audiovisual information technologies. VISNET II integrates a large number of researchers who have made significant contributions to the advance of this field of technology through standardisation activities, international publications, conferences and workshops activities, patents as well as many other prestigious achievements. The 12 integrated organisations represent 7 European states spanning across a major part of Europe, thereby promising the efficient dissemination of resulting technological development and exploitation to larger communities.

VISNET II builds on the success and achievements of the existing VISNET NoE to continue the progress towards achieving the NoE mission of creating a sustainable world force in Networked Audiovisual (AV) Media Technologies. VISNET II is a network of excellence with a clear vision for integration, research and dissemination plans described in various sections of this proposal. The research activities within VISNET II will cover 3 major thematic areas related to networked 2D/3D AV systems and home platforms. These are: - Video Coding - Audiovisual Media Processing - Security VISNET II brings together 12 leading European organisations in the field of Networked Audiovisual Media Technologies. VISNET II will continue to be coordinated by the Centre for Communication Systems Research (CCSR), a part of an academic school at the University of Surrey that is heavily involved in EU IST projects and is one of the 2 only universities in the UK which have achieved a 5*A ranking in the last RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) carried out for UK universities. VISNET II has a demonstrable plan of activities involving all its member organisations for the first 3 years of its lifetime as well as a clear vision for durability and sustainability thereafter.
