SUSTAINABLE AQUAFEEDS TO MAXIMISE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF FARMED FISH FOR CONSUMERS

Objectif

AquaMax will (a) develop feeds based largely on sustainable alternatives to fish meal and fish oil to produce fish that are highly nutritious, health - beneficial and acceptable to consumers, consistent with optimising the health and welfare of the farmed fish; (b) advance analytical methodology to detect very low levels of contaminants in feeds to ensure farmed fish are as low in contaminants as possible; (c) assess health benefits of fish produced on new diets by conducting studies in pregnant women focussing on predictors of atopic disease and on the development of immune competence and atopic disease in early infancy; (d) assess the safety of fish farmed on the new diets by developing new molecular methods to complement existing traditional methods to evaluate the safety of farmed fish, taking full account of interactions between toxic contaminants and beneficial nutrients; (e) assess consumer acceptance of fish farmed on the new diets by conducting taste panel trials and objective electronic sensory evaluations of the final products; (f) assess consumer perception of fish farmed on conventional and new diets using focus groups, and responses of consumers purchasing the new fish in retail outlets; (g) conduct socio-economic analyses of farming fish on the new diets.
