Objectif The project aims to provide anticipatory intelligence on a core challenge to European manufacturing identified by Foresight studies: the transition to a user centred innovation mode. This intelligence will support DG RTD's NMP priority and the Manufuture Technology Platform in planning future activities to address this challenge. The knowledge will also be valuable to Stakeholders from industry, research and other policy realms in strategy building. Finally, the interactive process of knowledge generation will initiate a knowledge community committed to addressing this challenge involving key actors from industry, research and policy. Results from previous Foresight studies indicate that for manufacturing industry in Europe to stay competitive in the long term, it must adopt more customer driven innovation modes that allow for integration of customers and users into all phases of the value adding chain. The design phase and manufacturing processes of product-service systems need to provide extremely flexible access for customers and users at various stages and highly advanced manufacturing process technologies and ICT solutions need to be combined in a special way. Companies also need to adopt new organisational solutions and develop specific skills for realising continuous interaction with customers. A number of concepts are emerging but little structured information is available. The UCIM project addresses this knowledge gap. The project will develop a set of roadmaps outlining various elements to be aligned in manufacturing to exploit user centred innovation. To start the roadmapping a typology of emerging concepts will be developed. The roadmaps will then be generated in lose interaction with stakeholders from industry, research and policy through interviews and interactive workshops. The roadmaps and associated information will be provided in a highly vivid format suitable for dissemination and discussion.
