Biofuels Technology Platform Secretariat

Obiettivo

The concept of a Technology Platform (TP) has been established by the European Commission as a new mechanism for fostering activities where research, technology and development are fundamental to addressing major economic, technological or societal challenges. While the main activities of the Biofuel TP will be supported by the participants themselves, there is a need for coordination, document handling, organisation of workshops and dissemination of information from and to members of the TP and others. The activities to fulfil this need are to be supported by the EC through a 'Secretariat'.

In this proposal two national (Swedish and German) organisations involved with energy and renewable biomaterials and a commercial SME (UK) with relevant experience in publications and websites as well as management of activities in the area of biomass and biofuels are proposing the responsibility for this Secretariat. Biofuels for transport have been recognized as a potential topic for such a TP.

To assess the potential of and to prepare an action for such a TP, a high-level Advisory Council was established as the Biofuels Research Advisory Council (BIOFRAC), members of which, representing the major European biofuels stakeholders (including the agricultural and forestry, biofuels industry, oil companies and fuel distributors and car manufacturers and research institutes) established the need for a BIOFUELS TP.

The main objective is to develop a vision report and a strategic research agenda up to 2030 that addresses all relevant issues to ensure biofuels reach and sustain a growing market in line with the Biofuels Directive and beyond. In particular it should identify those aspects of research, development and demonstration that can facilitate this and - as a reference document for all stakeholders including policy-makers - will also be of value in developing priorities for the 7th RTD Framework Programme.
