Shared knowledge base for sustainable innovation policies

Obiettivo

It is generally accepted that innovation, in its various forms, is the key driver for economic renewal and growth. Economies, despite of their size, economic structure or location, are seeking improved competitiveness through building and sustaining systems and environments, which facilitate innovation. In consequence, growth-oriented business, investments and competence are driven by environments that can facilitate innovation and success. Today's economic policy is increasingly about building and sustaining competitive innovation environments.
As a response to the above challenges, many national ministries responsible for science and innovation have either launched or considered launching research programmes to deepen the understanding of changing policy environments and the need for effective policy measures. The national research programmes have taken various forms and they all have their own specific aims and characteristics related to the national context. To a great extent, so far these aims and efforts have been addressed nationally.

In a globalised and increasingly complex world a strong knowledge base provides the basis for developing and sustaining a modern, forward-looking innovation policy. National efforts, however, alone are often not sufficient to tackle these complex challenges. The VISION ERA-NET will provide one mechanism to resolve this challenge by stepping up and broadening the coverage of innovation policy studies carried out in national programmes through an actively coordinated network.

There are apparent benefits to be gained through increased European cooperation and competence sharing in innovation and technology policy-related research, for example in:
- sharing of topical policy-related research issues and exchanging views
- comparison and assessments of policy approaches to specific challenges, such as
- increased internationalisation of R&D
- methodological benchmarking of policy assessments
