Objective

Improved steel cleanness is essential for higher quality steels. Despite extensive research, carry-through or agglomeration of inclusions during casting leads to poor steel quality. Much work has focused on steel-making, yet there remains limited understanding of inclusion interactions at the submerged entry nozzle, leading to defects.

This project will:
Relate inclusion behaviour with stable and unstable casting parameters, including application of novel techniques.
Extend CFD modelling capabilities to inclusion agglomeration in complex, unstable, and two-phase flows.
Develop recommendations for improved performance and practical systems related to stopper accretions, nozzle blockage, nozzle gas pressures and inclusion removal in tundish and mould.
