More efficient cleaning concepts for stepping up availability of lignite-fired power plants

Objectif

As a domestic raw material, lignite plays an important and indispensable role as a competitive energy source in the power generation mix of many European countries. The specific properties of this energy source lead to low ash softening and melting temperatures resulting in fouling and slagging in the boiler during combustion.

The mixing of the coal charge and adapted control of the firing process alone do not prevent that the lignite-based power generation is still affected by massive availability restrictions due to fouling. Such restrictions can only be reduced by using highly efficient cleaning equipment.

Therefore, the objective of this project is to test, under demonstration conditions, improved cleaning equipment and new heating surfaces suited for more efficient cleaning measures. These measures will enhance the availability and competitiveness of this energy source and help maintaining its vital role in European power supply.
