Objective

Savings of 11M EUR/year could be achieved by European plate manufacturers, through the optimisation of the extremity length to cut out and the reduction of associated handling operations. Such a target seems achievable by combining non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques.

Ultrasonic or magnetic techniques alone provide insufficient predictions but combining them showed promising prospects during recent laboratory work. The proposal aims to investigate thoroughly the performance of such combinations on a comprehensive selection of textured plates, with laboratory and in-plant investigations.
