Project description IST-2004-2.3.4.1 b7 Show the project objective Hide the project objective Carbon nanotubes have several unique electrical and mechanical properties. We plan to take advantage of these extraordinary properties by developingnanotube sensors working close to the quantum limit of sensitivity. Wepropose to extend the operation of HEMT/FET-type of nanotube devices to thequantum limit, and to demonstrate their usefulness in conjunction with amechanical nanotube resonator serving as a force sensor at sub-attoNewtonresolution. The devices to be investigated include a) a high-frequency carbon nanotubeFET, b) carbon nanotube rf-SET, and c) superconducting nanotube transistor. Our devices will provide either unsurpassed sensitivity or band width forthe detection of charge and mechanical motion. In addition to thedevelopment of these three detector-amplifiers, we plan to study the contactresistance between nanotubes and metallic electrodes, the understanding ofwhich is crucial for the optimization of carbon nanotube devices. The finalgoal is to build a sub-attoNewton force sensor that would act simultaneouslyas the sensing element and, as well, as its own first stage preamplifier.
