Cel European music educational institutions need to increase their efficiency while reducing costs, to be more attractive and effective and to provide a wider access. IT can offer innovative solutions by exploiting new pedagogical paradigms with cooperative and interactive self-learning environment, gesture interface and augmented instruments, with computer-assisted tuition in classrooms to offer technology-enhanced environment for ear- and practical-training, creativity-, analysis-, and theory-training, cultural navigation, ensemble playing, composition, etc. Music performance is not simply to play the right note at the right time. I-MAESTRO project aims to study and explore all the relevant aspects in order to produce methods and tools for music education with innovative pedagogical paradigms, taking into account key factors such as expressivity, interactivity, gesture controllability and cooperative-work among participants. The capabilities of the results will be validated and assessed with a set of tools and methodologies:(i) innovative tools for music courseware production;(ii) interactive and creative tools for music training in different environments such as classrooms and cooperative work, on different devices such as PC and Tablet-PC;(iii) assessment and pedagogical models for music training. The validation and demonstration activities will be performed during regular music training courses in major European Institutions. Project outcomes include an exploitation plan to transform the demonstrators and the results into real products and services. This is highly achievable, particularly with the SME partners, including SIBELIUS, a world leader in music education tools, and the development of the MPEG Symbolic Music Representation (MPEG-SMR) standard.
