Anticipating Future and Emerging Information Society Technologies

Objetivo

The purpose of BEYOND-THE-HORIZON is to provide input about IST-related emerging trends and strategic research areas that require support, through a well-organised, extensive and systematic consultation of the relevant research community throughout Europe, involving the main actors and experts in the related fields.

The particular goals are:
(1) To identify advanced strategic areas and challenging long-term goals;
(2) To analyse their scientific, societal, and industrial impact and to deliver roadmaps for paving advances in these areas within a timeframe of fifteen years; and
(3) To investigate new frontiers for ICT research, to identify the boundaries to other disciplines, as well as interrelationships among them and opportunities for cross-fertilization.

The project will be based on several thematic groups that will work in a parallel yet coordinated fashion. Each group will focus on a particular research area, will deliver a research and development roadmap for this area, and will analyse the potential scientific, industrial and societal impact. To support these thematic groups in conducting their work and delivering their results, appropriate advanced communication tools will be provided. These instruments will prove a valuable asset in reducing time and personnel efforts and costs. The final number and form of the thematic groups will be established at a dedicated Opening Workshop. Prior to the opening workshop, the Scientific Steering Committee will prepare a Preliminary Document containing an initial, non-binding selection of grand challenges and thematic areas. This will provide a reliable ground for reflection. As the project moves on, the thematic groups' intermediate findings will be discussed at a Consolidation Workshop, before the final group reports are produced and integrated. BEYOND-THE-HORIZON will produce a number of reports, targeted at different audiences: research community, industry, policy makers and society.
