Advancing interactive Broadband satellite access by optimal convergence of session based services over DVB-RCS

Objective

VIVALDI is a 24 Months project in which 2 leading companies in the satellite ground segment area, one S/W developing house, two service providers and two academic partners cooperate. The partners are from 7 Different countries, 3 are SME.

VIVALDI will advance the state of the art of interactive broadband satellite access by optimal convergence of session-based services over the European standard DVB-RCS. VIVALDI will research and develop the architecture, technologies and protocols ensuring that the satellite segment interoperates transparently and efficiently with the end-to-end IP networks at large. It will allow a generalised and affordable availability of broadband access to European users, including those in less developed regions, peripheral and rural areas.

VIVALDI exploits the advantages of satellite communications and the open standard DVB-RCS technology, and focuses on developing the capability of such systems to offer efficient and low cost applications and services such as VoIP and other session based services that in the broader context of broadband access require special care of End-to-End Quality of Service (QoS). VIVALDI technologies: System architecture, advanced algorithms for end-to-end signalling, satellite resource allocation and media flow throughout the network. VIVALDI will suggest enhancements to the DVB-RCS standard. This will lay the foundation for full interoperability by expanding the standardization and implementation recommendations to higher layers.

A standardized integrated QoS support for IP services in DVB-RCS is a major breakthrough in the development and evolution of satellite networks, which in turn will benefit the European and Global community as a whole though increased functionality and lowered cost of usage. The proposal continues already launched initiatives in ESA and in the EU, as it builds on the achievement of SatLabs, the DVB Project and ETSI specifications, as well as on several EC and national funded projects.
