Regional modelling of dairy sector and Assessment for a sustainable development in a less-favoured region - Reunion

Objetivo

A substantial share of livestock production in the world takes place in harsh environments with high agro-ecological constraints and uncertainties. This agro-climatic and socio-economical environment conditions farmers' decision-making process and also the priorities for the sustainable development of the livestock sector.

The objective is to develop:
- a regional model to assess the impacts of technical or agro-environmental policies change on the viability and sustainability of livestock farming systems (LFS),
- integrating farmers' attitude to risk, especially in the resource management, that appears as a key factor to understand efficiency of LFS, and environmental challenge.

The regional model has to assess the impacts of agro-environmental measures on the viability of LFS, the environmental and social sustainability in harsh environment that suffer from lack of employment. This regional model should be used as decision-support tools by decision-makers, at the local but also national or community levels, to implement appropriated policies for a sustainable development.

The specific objectives are:
- to integrate some environmental risks and the environmental risk perception by farmers on a modelling approach to analyse the impact of agricultural change due to external interventions on the environment,
- develop a prospective approach of the social, economic and environmental dynamic of rural area oriented on livestock production,
- develop local competence on bio-economic modelling at regional level.

At the end, this ToK project will improve:
- collaboration between European research institutes,
- develop modelling competences in economics and environmental research at La Reunion, but also in the host institute with extension in other are as, especially in developing countries,
- provide a better understanding of the impacts of new agro-environmental policies on the livestock farming systems, the environment and the employment.
