UK Presidency Conference. The European Charter and Code for Researchers: Turning Policy into Practice

Cel

In response to the ERA debate started in 2000 and consolidated politically by the Lisbon agenda, whose overall strategic objective is to make 'Europe the most dynamic and competitive knowledge economy in the world by 2010', the European Commission has adopted new instruments aimed at contributing to the development of a European labour market for researchers, namely the European Charter for Researchers and a Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. These provide a framework of general principles for the roles, requirements and entitlements of researchers, funders and employers.

This UK Presidency conference is designed to explore the benefits of adopting these principles and identify the practicalities of application. The conference will use a mix of strategic plenary presentations, practical workshop sessions and panel discussions to explore the issues and develop practical solutions. The keynote speakers and workshop leaders will be drawn from a range of experiences across sectors and Member States. In order for the principles of the Charter and Code to be adopted it is important to facilitate change within employing organisations, which need to be convinced of the benefits of implementation. Thus the participants will include people that are empowered to ensure a real change.

Participants will include:
- HR and Personnel Directors of both academic and non-academic employers;
- University Deans and R&D Directors;
- National and European representative bodies concerned with the interests of researchers;
- National and European bodies representing researchers; and
- Professional associations and institutions including government representatives and awarding bodies concerned with postgraduate education and employment.
