Phyto-chemical and pharmacological study of plants used in traditional medicine in Cameroon

Ziel

Natural product chemistry continues to provide a rich source of pharmacologically active compounds and therefore extensively contributes to the chemical repertoire of medicinal chemistry. The development of new drugs still very much relies on the utilisation of physiologically active natural products.

The proposed project focuses on the isolation, structural characterization, and determination of the biological activity of secondary metabolites produced by plants of Psorospermum species. In Cameroon traditional pharmacopoeia plays an essential role in health care due to the elevated costs of synthetic agents and their sometimes-undesirable side effects. An inquiry among traditional healers in the pygmee region in Cameroon revealed that many Psorospermum species are used in different local preparation commercialised against parasites. Besides antimicrobial and antifungal assays, the evaluation of antimalaria activity of the plant constituents is a major issue within the project.
